Margaret Motsage Album Review – Dwala Lam

Artists/DJ: Margaret Motsage
Album Title: Dwala Lam
Genre: Gospel
Year of Release: 2009

In gospel music, the ability to sing amazingly is key. But even so, sometimes it takes a little more than just a great voice to be able to deliver great compositions. In this genre, one needs to have the talent and a unique approach to the genre.

Margaret Motsage is one individual who has injected unusual, unique elements into gospel songs we are used to. The sister, who recently released her album entitled Dwala Lam, has found comfort in mixing gospel compositions with soulful jazz.

Having been able to draw different elements from other genres and incorporate them with gospel music is an approach that has set this project apart from the rest. On the album, packed with twelve blessed songs, the artist showcases her irresistible vocal chords in songs such as, ‘He Knows’, ‘I Found The Answer’, ‘Shout His Name’, ‘I Need Thee/I’ll Rise Again’, ‘Siyakudumisa’ and many more.

If you want some spiritual relaxation, Margaret’s music takes the listener on a soulful gospel train. Dwala Lam is so well done that one gets taken away instantly. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing along to this talented artist – her music carries a lot of positive spirit.

Marking her success, Margaret was recently awarded the Best Jazz award at the 2nd SABC Gospel Music Awards held in Durban. In the category, the artist was competing with another gifted composer, Ernie Smith. Margaret’s winning the award clearly shows how well-crafted her music is. What stands out on this release is her incredible singing talent, the selection of musical instruments, the arrangement, and finally the fine quality of the overall project.

There is no doubt that this artist has the potential to become a favourite amongst gospel music lovers. Lord, we thank you for such an amazing talent, giving us songs of comfort, worship and praise.

The problem I have with former family factory aka Joyous celebration members is their commitment to Afro-american gospel like singing. Margaret is talented and a very good singer but I just hope that she could do more of african gospel songs.

I hope this album is different.

  3. Andile Maqoma Says:

I think you will stand testament after hearing this album that she doesn’t forget her roots. But if you are wanting Margaret to sing like Hlengiwe or Rebecca in order for you to acknowledge that she is true to her roots, then you are doing this superb singer a great injustice.

It’s time that we except the advancement of music in terms of quality and originality.

I think she did a marvelous job! I’m just disappointed that we did not see her perform live alot. But we live in hope!

  4. Tshepo Says:

this is a very beautiful album,
To you Funny, South Africa has a lot of your African singers (as you call it), We’ve got the Ncandweni’s, Deborah Fraser’s, the list is endless, of these African singers who sing the same way, same songs, same boring chord progressions of non-inspiring music. We need people like Margaret who’ll always push the bar, who’ll always get out her comfort zone and give us good music,
BIG UPS!! Margaret on this one,

    Hi guys!

I appreciate all your support and encouragement very much.I also take the criticism with all humility. What I sought to do with Dwala Lam’ was to show how diverse we South Africans really are.Can you imagine if we all sounded the same?! What you hear on that cd is my heart and soul and not conforming to what is already there.I hope and trust that with every project, I will grow and not be intimidated by change.
    Love,MM

Wow I just watched Margaret Motsage performing ‘Siyakudumisa’ for the second time 2day. 1st on Gospel Gold nd second time on Gospel time. It’s a beautiful song. Besides the sheer beauty and power of her voice, what I love and respect about Margaret is the quality of her work and musicianship. It is truly of an international standard.
