Iconic gospel muso, Rebecca Malope is set to tap into the film industry. The gospel heavyweight will star in a movie based on her illustrious music career.
The movie will be directed by fellow musician, Chicco Sello Twala, who was very instrumental in the success of her career. Twala told reporters yesterday that they will start filming in less than 10 days.
Twala said the movie is in three sections; Rebecca the teenager, a successful Rebecca in her 30s and finally her true self towards the end of the film. He said the movie traces Malope’s journey from her hometown, Nelspruit to Jo’burg, where she is now based.
Once a farm labourer living with an abusive father, Malope followed her music dream to become one of the most celebrated musicians in Africa. Her career started in 1986, when she left her home township of Lekazi and hiked 400 km to Evaton, and finally reached Johannesburg. This brave step launched a personal journey of achievement that now touches millions of people. According to Twala, this will motivate impoverished young girls in South Africa.
“It will show them that if they want something badly they must work hard to make it happen. Rebecca’s is a rags-to-riches story,” he said in an interview with daily newspaper, Sowetan.
Twala, who also produced hits for Brenda Fassie, said filming will take place in Nelspruit, Pretoria, Evaton and Johannesburg.

I am writing this because my heart aches for 4 young men in WINBURG, Free State. They do sing gospel like pro’s but they are so excluded from everything in the country. They are wonderful Sotho young men who finished Gr 12 I think 2 years ago. They dont have the finances to go to any auditions and although we are only 125 km away from Bloemfontein, they dont have the resources to even go to Bloem for auditions. They do not have access to the internet, that is why I am writing this. If there is someone out there who can help this young people to go places, please, PLEASE help us to help them. They are humble, beautiful young men and because we are pensioners, it is not possible for me to help them financially. They came to see me this morning and plead for help. All they want to do is SING! If you hear the voice of Jesus in this pleading, please react on it.

Zukiswa I only hope that the ovie will do justice to its viewers. I will go and watch only because there aren’t gospel based movies in south africa. Yes her testimony is worth watching and listening to, but Im afraid that Rebbecca and the producers wanted to save costs, thats why the chose her to star her own movie. Quiet unfair when you think how much talent we have out the. Indeed the Kholekas, and many other renowned artists would have loved to play such an important role. I mean even Lesego (ex Isidingo actress) lay herself low to act as Brenda Fassie. She didnt say I am a squiky clean to play the character of Brenda. Even on this movie, the producers should have given other great women musicians a chance to persue the dream of acting while they sing. We already know that Ribs is an actress. But, did she have to prove it once again? Not even Julius Malema can play his own role. Im disturbed by this.
