Top South African gospel singer Sechaba has been described as “ecstatic” after being nominated for an MTN South African Music Award (SAMA) yesterday. Despite releasing commercially successful albums since 2005, the Johannesburg based singer had never been nominated in the coveted awards.
“I am very happy, unfortunately I’m in a meeting and I can’t express the way I feel right now,” commented Sechaba when we called him this afternoon.
Sechaba’s third album Mangihamba Nawe is nominated in the Best Traditional Gospel Album category and will have to beat arch-rival, Sipho “Big Fish” Makhabane’s Ebenezer, to win the prestigious SAMA trophy next month.
Sechaba has, to date released three albums; Sechaba (2005), Modimo Oteng (2008) and Mangihamba Nawe (2010). He has also worked with some of the most respected artists in the country including, Benjamin Dube and Makhabane. His stable, Bula Music, also said they were overwhelmed with the progress the singer is making in his career. “We are pleased that Sechaba’s presence is now felt in the gospel industry. His latest album is doing extremely well in the market,” said Bula in a media release.
Other gospel musicians nominated this year include Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Winnie Mashaba, Joyous Celebration, Solly Mahlangu, Benjamin Dube and Jay.
Running for the 16th year, the awards will be held at the Sun City Superbowl on 17 April, 2010 and broadcast live on SABC 1 from 20H00.
