Controversial gospel singer Lundi Tyamara is sick and needs prayers from fans. His manager, Tshepo Dzimande confirmed to a Sunday newspaper that the “Umphefumulo wami” hit maker was admitted to South Rand Hospital in Rosettenvile, Johannesburg early last week.

“I can confirm that Lundi was in hospital last week. He was released after three days and is recovering at home,” said Dzimande.

A source at the hospital also said the multi-award winning singer was vomiting blood when he arrived at the hospital.

Once an emulated gospel musician, Lundi lost touch with many gospel music fans when he started making headlines for his allegedly wild behavior. He has previously made headlines for drug and alcohol abuse, sleeping with multiple partners, abusing women and attacking journalists. He was also the first gospel musician to win Metro’s Most Controversial Personality award.

But Lundi, 30, blames journalists for ruining his career. In August 2006, he told a Tonight journalist that he would retire at 30 because he was tired of the media. “I am tired. I want to retire when I’m 30. I want to go back to my home in Worcester and open up a business that has nothing to do with the music industry,” he said in an interview.

His latest album ‘Inkosi Iyayazi’, was met with mixed reviews last year, failing to win awards like most of his previous albums.

We wish Lundi a speedy recovery.

Artists/DJ: Sechaba

Album Title: Modimo O Teng’

Genre: Gospel

Year of Release: 2008

Once a street kid from Johannesburg, Free State-born Sechaba has miraculously carved out a notable name for himself on the local gospel scene. His latest album ‘Modimo O Teng’ has been doing fairly well since its release late last year. On the album, he works with gospel music producer Tshepo Nzimande, who is also his longtime mentor.

The album starts with ‘Lapo ukhona’, a track that has very minimal instrumental backing, only accompanied by a soothing violin. The progression sounds very familiar to that of ‘alpha and omega’, a classical African composition that has also been performed in many languages worldwide. He praises the lord and persistently assures Christians that God is always there no matter the magnitude of life’s problems.

The second track is titled ‘Mina Ngialibona’. It’s an ordinary track that’s perhaps made more captivating by a very familiar featured male vocalist. The CD cover fails to reveal any details but my guess is that Lundi Tyamara lent his voice on the song.

Lyrically, Modimo O Teng’ is not as powerful as his past album, this shown in the singer’s reliance on well-known folk compositions like ‘wozani’ and ‘siyakudumisa’. ‘Hanthe Jesu’ is possibly his best effort on the album. Backed by soft female vocals, he uses a lead-and-response style on the chorus and delivers well on all the verses.

Sechaba seals the album with ‘kuwe baba’ a track that’s smoothly introduced by strings, piano notes, cymbals and occasional military drums.

Instrumentally, Sechaba uses keyboard strings, bass guitar and occasional lead guitar melodies. Overall, it’s a good album and I can recommend it to anyone who loves inspirational African gospel music.

Cover/Art: 1/5 | Sound/Technical: 4/5 | Rating: 6.5/10

Renowned gospel musician, Lundi Tyamara teamed up with legendary gospel producer Sizwe Zako last year to produce his latest offering ‘Inkos’ Iyayazi’. We managed to talk to him about the album.

How is the latest album doing?

Lundi: It’s been doing great and I am very pleased with it.

What are you doing to promote it?

Lundi: Well, we did a lot of promotional events last year but right now I’m busy with other things and I cannot fully commit to massive promotions.

Which other things are you doing?

Lundi: I am currently helping other artists and also helping impoverished children in the country and I have also committed myself to furthering my education.

You have collaborated with a lot of musicians to date, is there anyone you still wish to work with?

Lundi: I’d love to work with Rebecca Malope again. I really wish to do a full album with her in the future.

Are you planning to release another album soon?

Lundi: Yes, that’s the idea and I’m very happy that everything is going according to plan. My next album will be released early next year.

What would you say has been your best album so far?

Lundi: All of them, I always put my best effort and I love how they all sound.

Any message for your fans?

Lundi: I’m very grateful. They’ve been with me all these years and I really appreciate it.

Johannesburg-based gospel songstress Zodwa Twecu is a good example of a committed Christian. In March last year, she lost her mother, husband and son but despite the devastating circumstances, she’s released a new album titled “My Life’, celebrating a new beginning and keeping her faith in God. We had a chance to know more about the album from Zodwa.

Who is Zodwa?

I was born in Port Elizabeth and started singing with a gospel group called The Real Christian Voices before I moved to pursuer my solo career in Johannesburg in 1997. It wasn’t as easy as I had anticipated but I finally met S’fiso Ncwane in 1999 and that’s when my career really changed. I started as backing vocalist and this got me a lot of exposure to also work with other well known musicians like Vuyo Mokoena, Deborah Fraser and Lundi Tyamara. I released my debut solo titled ‘Zodwa’in 2003. After that, I’ve released four albums, the latest titled “My Life’

What inspired you to do this album?

I was devastated after loosing my family. I was under a lot of pain but I realised that the Lord was testing my faith and strength so I remained strong and this album expresses my undying love for the Lord. The album is about healing and keeping your faith in God.

What’s your favorite track on the album?

I love them all you know but perhaps I can say “Under the Blood” because it makes me understand what’s going on in my life; it’s like my pillar of strength.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m now working as a record producer and currently in studio with my first gospel artist so am likely going to focus more in producing my own artists but will obviously keep on releasing more albums in the future.

How can your fans get in touch with you?

Firstly, let me say I was touched with the support I got from my fans during my trials and tribulations. It was helpful and I really appreciate it. Thanks a lot and keep on supporting me. My email is zodwatwecu@webmail.co.za
